Despite breaking his left hand in the 4th round Sergio Martinez relieved Julio Cesar Chavez (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) of his WBC World middleweight title. The unanimous verdict by the ringside judges was : 117-110, 118-109, 118-109.
Martinez’s trainer Pablo Sarmiento said to ESPN “I’d offer credit for not showing that he [Martinez] was compromised [by the injury] during the tussle. He suffered a broken left hand in round four.”
It is considered that the left hand of ‘Maravilla’ causes the most damage to his opponents . With the announcement that he had fought 8 rounds with only one sound hand has led to speculation that Julio Cesar was fortunate not to suffer a severe in addition to losing his World title.
Where there should be no doubt is the never say die Mexican spirit of Julio Cesar Chavez remained intact throughout the fight and with the vocal support of his fans and countrymen at full volume and threatening to take the roof off the Thomas and Mack arena in Las Vegas, the son of the truly great Julio Cesar Chavez refused to give ground despite the contnual pressure from his formidable Argentine opponnent.
Then came the 12th and final round and with the points tally set in an unbeatable total in favour of 'Maravilla' the result seeme to conclusive but with his nose bloodied and eyes swollen, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. dug deep and powerful left hooks to the body and head caused blood to spill from the nose and mouth of 'Maravilla" and with his legs going in different directions he was sprawled on the canvas.
It seemed as if a volcano had suddenly exploded; the crowd went absolutely wild with excitement and the seemingly certain points win of 'Maravilla' had dramatically changed; the 'Fat Lady' would need to sing a different song. However, the courage and toughness noted in Argentine boxers was firmly set in survival mode and 'Maravilla' was forced to strruggle to his feet and last the tempestuous last round to claim the coveted WBC title. ~
